Fishing for a Purpose.

At ZeeBaaS, we believe in more than just crafting premium fishing reels — we believe in making a difference by helping others. That is why we are honored to introduce THE DREAM REEL 2.0, inspired by an incredible young man, David Leonard, whose strength and joy shine through despite life’s challenges.

2025: David (age 21) geared up to experience a motorcycle ride.

David was born in 2004, and for the first few months, he seemed like any other baby — until his parents, Greg and Vera, noticed developmental delays. At just over a year old, he suffered his first grand mal seizure, marking the beginning of a long medical journey. After years of uncertainty and countless hospital visits, David was diagnosed with Lissencephaly, a rare neurological condition that affects brain development, causing severe physical and cognitive challenges. Most children with this condition don’t live past the age of 10, yet at 21, David continues to defy the odds with his unbreakable spirit.

Though David has endured over 30 surgeries and faces daily challenges, he remains a source of joy and inspiration. His family refuses to treat him as a disabled person—instead, they ensure he experiences as much of life as possible by fully including him in everything they do. Whether it’s boating, motorcycle rides, camping, or a trip to Disney World, David is never left behind. He loves the outdoors, playing on his tablet, watching movies, and simply being with the people who love him. His infectious laughter and resilient heart remind us that strength isn’t measured in physical ability but in the love and joy we share.

Why We Selected David?

This is an amazing story that you can not make up — a story I beg you to give a few minutes to read about. When times like this occur in your life, you have to embrace it and be thankful for what is going on … and for even being such a minor part of the combined effort that helps improve someone’s quality of life.

2018: Playful little Owen (age 2) minutes before pulling the winning number.

We created our first Dream Reel in 2018 to help Owen Hanecak (#owenstrong). If you are not familiar with Owen’s fight, please visit www.Fishing4Life.com to read about it. Fast forward to 2024 … and with sincere thanks to all those who supported him and the Hanecak family, little Owen is strong and doing extremely well today! He has been recognized as the Miracle Child at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center (CCMC). Owen and his parents, Jay and Karyn, are part of UCONN’s Annual Huskie-Thon Fundraiser, which recently raised 1.4 million dollars to help children and families in need.

2018: Greg and David (age 16) — Winners of The Dream Reel.

Now, back to the question … WHY WE SELECTED DAVID for The Dream Reel 2.0?
Well, in 2018 we extended the drawing by a week because Owen was not feeling well after his treatment. During those seven days, David’s father (Greg Leonard, an avid angler) donated to help Owen. In doing so, he received a chance at winning The Dream Reel. Well, his chance paid off! Owen pulled the one number Greg purchased, which I will always refer to it as “David’s number”.

That night I phoned Greg to congratulate him and found out that he lived in SW Florida. It just so happened that the next day, I was flying to visit my parents in Fort Myers, which was not far from Greg. When I told him that I would hand deliver The Dream Reel to him, he explained to me that he has a disable child and asked if we could meet at a McDonald’s right off I-75 because the location was easier for them to get in and out of with the van and wheelchair.

I gladly agreed, and my mother, father, and I drove up I-75 and had the pleasure of meeting the father and son who won. I saw David’s inability to be part of our conversation, but his beautiful smile told me he was part of it. As we began to know each other, I quickly found Greg to be a genuine man with a big heart. While being a full-time field technician for Caterpillar, Greg outfitted a pontoon boat, allowing him to take disabled children and veterans fishing and even hold tournaments for the kids. He did this in his limited free-time he had from work, with his son David by his side, and with help from his wife Vera, and children Gage, Jake, and Katie.

Fast forward to 2019Greg called me to inform me that he no longer had The Dream Reel. Respectfully, I thanked him for letting me know, and I explained to him that The Dream Reel he won was his, and that I hoped he did extremely well when he sold it. He responded by telling me in the words I will never forget. Greg said, “Ron, I didn’t sell the reel; I donated it to Toys for Tots, and it raised several thousand dollars. I’m happy to see that the reel lives on and continues to help others.”

Greg’s generosity not only struck me because he donated this valuable reel but also because he and his family donates a major amount of time and effort to help others each year while managing their own needs at home.

Fast forward to 2024, when we were searching for a family to help after we created The Dream Reel 2.0 I called Greg to learn how David and the family were doing over the years. Greg told me how David continues to require regular assistance, but also how he is progressing. I asked him how the decked out pontoon boat and the trips were going, and Greg responded to me; “I no longer have the boat — I donated it to a non-profit in New Port Richey that has a 501c called VetCatch, and the boat is being used more often to help others than I was able to on my limited free-time.” As our conversation continued, Greg explained to me that every dollar he put into the boat for upgrades was given to him in donations for taking people out. Even though it was his time to upgrade the boat and take people out, he couldn’t take a dime for it … and had to pass it on for a greater cause. As you can imagine, this solidified my search for the recipient of THE DREAM REEL 2.0 efforts.

I only hope each of you can share this amazing story of how Owen pulled David’s number out of tens of thousands of people who stepped up to help Owen. It is amazing how every little bit that each of us can give will lend tremendous support to others in need. Whether it is a simple donation or sharing this story with others to help spread the word to help ignite this effort … or if you do both … we are thankful of you!

We at ZeeBaaS, the Hanecak family, the Leonard family, and the future families we will all help together throughout the years, sincerely THANK YOU for your time, efforts, generosity, and your heartfelt support.

Health and happiness to you, your family, and your friends.
